Local high school students took an active role in government and civic engagement last week during Senator Darby Hills’ (R-Barrington Hills) Youth Advisory Council at the Lake County Courthouse.
“It was an honor to spend the day with such passionate and curious young leaders,” said Senator Hills. “Their thoughtful questions and enthusiasm remind me why investing in civic education is so important. I hope this experience inspired them to stay involved and continue making a difference.”
The day-long event offered students a unique, behind-the-scenes look at state and local government. Students had the opportunity to hear from local judges, law enforcement, and community leaders while participating in activities that highlighted both the legislative and judicial branches of government. From a mock committee hearing to observing the Drug Court in action, the experience was designed to empower students with a deeper understanding of how government functions and how they can play a role in shaping their communities.

“I wanted to participate in the Youth Advisory Council because I wanted to learn more about our government,” said Madalyn Gardner, a student from Mundelein High School. “It is important for young people to understand how government works because we are the future of our society and knowing how the government works and how things are passed is crucial.”
The program not only provided valuable insight into the workings of government but also fostered thoughtful conversations among students from across the region. By collaborating with their peers and engaging directly with public officials, students were able to see how their voices matter and how they can influence positive change in their communities.
“It is important to set aside the time to get to know and learn more about the government,” said Vance Conway, a student from Carmel Catholic High School. “I want to study political science in college, so this event has been awesome. It is a great opportunity to communicate with other students and learn about how the government works. I highly recommend it to everyone.”
The Youth Advisory Council is part of Senator Hills’ ongoing efforts to encourage leadership, public service, and active citizenship among the next generation.
